The rolling Tuscan countryside, the heritage forts of Rajasthan, the azure beaches of Tulum, a French town boasting Haussmann architecture and the lush verdancy of Kerala—these stunning local and international destinations are not just dream vacation spots but also perfect for unforgettable weddings. However, planning a destination wedding involves a detailed to-do list—from choosing the perfect venue to the right entertainment. This is where our team of expert planners come in. Take notes…

Udaipur

Udaipur is incredible for its natural beauty and epic palaces. Asking your guests to travel here will be easy enough to convince. Sure, hosting a royal wedding in Udaipur seems obvious, but even that beloved aesthetic has evolved with more facets than ever before, shares Tina Tharwani, the co-founder of Shaadi Squad. “Udaipur is apt for celebrations of any size, offering diverse venues, top-notch vendors and excellent local support. The city promises serene lakes, lush hills and opulent architecture along with rich cultural heritage.”

Where to wed

“One of the most gorgeous weddings we planned was at the Taj Lake Palace. Nestled inthe centre of Lake Pichola, the property offers world-class amenities, ensuring a romantic experience,” says Tharwani. Raffles Udaipur, The Oberoi Udaivilas and The Leela Palace Udaipur offer expansive, regal spaces. For small weddings, she suggests RAAS Devigarh for its luxurious setting. “Jag Mandir Palace, characterised by stunning architecture, creates an enchanting backdrop for exchanging vows.”

How to elevate

Bandhani to Jal Sanjhi, Udaipur speaks to its storied art and crafts. “Infuse traditional elements like the Ghoomar and Kalbeliya dances for your sangeet, and folk music for a vibrant atmosphere. Miniature paintings and meenakari work can be integrated into the décor and jewellery.”

What to see and do

“Visit City Palace, Jagmandir Island Palace and Saheliyon-ki-Bari for the architecture. Explore the city's lakes on a luxurious boat ride. Indulge in traditional handicrafts and jewellery at local markets.”

Bali

Luxury, exclusivity and serenity are guaranteed in this Indonesian province. Bali enchants with endless ocean views, azure waters, white sand beaches and lush verdancy, primed for the most Instagrammable nuptials. “The tropical paradise is a dream destination for weddings. Its exotic beaches at Nusa Dua and Seminyak are ideal for beachside ceremonies. Bali’s array of luxury resorts offer comprehensive wedding packages for a stress-free experience. The easy logistics enhance the cultural and practical aspects of the event,” reveals Tharwani.

Where to wed

“Expect extensive beachfront and garden spaces at AYANA Resort and Spa.” Check out bride Salonika Rathod and groom Rahul Rathod’s extravagant wedding planned by Shaadi Squad for proof. Tharwani also recommends The Mulia in Nusa Dua, which is a grand all-suite property. “If you’re craving an intimate affair, Bulgari Resort Bali is home to 59 villas, suites and mansions. Or pick Alila Villas Uluwatu.”

How to elevate

Enlist local florists, artisanal touches like Capiz-shell charger plates and ikat textiles, gourmet caterers and experienced vendors who will make “wedding planning seamless here. In the past, we have incorporated Balinese traditions like the Melukat purification ceremony, Legong and Kecak dance performances, and handcrafted local décor,” says Tharwani.

What to see and do

“Iconic spots like Tanah Lot temple, Ubud Monkey Forest and the Uluwatu Temple are must-visits. Enjoy some water sports or trekking. Or learn the art of Balinese cuisine with cooking classes in Ubud. Indulge in rejuvenating spa treatments.”

Dehradun

Uttarakhand’s bustling capital is touted as the City of Love, dotted with forests, mountains and rivers. “One of the many charms of Dehradun is its pleasant weather throughout the year, which allows you to plan a summer ceremony to escape the heat and a winter wonderland wedding,” explains Pritie Jain behind Bling Mushrooms. “Its accessibility, range of accommodations and venues, and local charm mean you won’t break the bank. Dehradun is steeped in history and culture to inject that touch of tradition and authenticity.”

Where to wed

As far as wedding locations go, Jain says, “Dehradun is home to a kaleidoscope of properties, from luxurious resorts to heritage properties and quaint garden venues that’ll suit every scale and style.” Perched at Mussoorie’s foothills, Hyatt Regency Dehradun is a 263-key property boasting 33,500 sqft of banqueting and events spaces with sprawling views of Malsi Reserved Forest or the mountains. “JW Marriott Mussoorie Walnut Grove Resort & Spa, too, is a great choice.”

How to elevate

“Embrace the terrain and work with the picturesque landscapes to dream up your big day. Local artists can provide Pahadi woodwork, intricate textiles, pottery and traditional paintings to include in the setting.” For a recent wedding Bling Mushrooms planned in Dehradun, they dreamed up Garhwali and Kumaoni gastronomic feasts like no other.

What to see and do

Robber's Cave, Mindrolling Monastery, Rajaji National Park, Tapkeshwar Temple, Mall Road and Paltan Bazaar are some of the hotspots that can be included as a sightseeing day in the wedding itinerary. “Those seeking adventure must include trekking, river rafting, paragliding, and rock climbing.”

Lake Como

Italy has all the assets for a show-stopping affair. Rome blends a modern metropolis appeal with its heritage. Tuscany wows with rolling hills, olive groves and centuries-old art and architecture. “The Amalfi Coast wows with its rugged shoreline, beaches and multi-hued fishing villages. Lake Como, the upscale resort region in North Italy, is a breath-taking paradise with historical legacy. With its sophisticated atmosphere and sumptuous fare, the mountain-fringed location exceeds expectations when it comes to saying ‘I Dos’,” says Jain.

Where to wed

Lake Como intrinsically connotes glamour, and for good reason. It’s a veritable stage with several heritage villas and plush hotels. Overlooking the eponymous lake, the 18th-century-built Villa del Balbianello, which played host to Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh’s nuptials, also served as the location for a three-day wedding planned by Jain in May 2024. “Just 30 minutes away, Hotel Villa Flori is fantastic too,” discloses Jain. Those looking to plan a contemporary wedding, must bookmark Hilton Lake Como.

How to elevate

“Create an unforgettable culinary experience with delicious local food and wine. For a recent wedding we planned at Lake Como, we created a ‘DIY Pizza’ brunch and a Venchi gelato cart,” shares Jain. “You can also organise a private lakeside dining experience, wine-tasting or a pasta-making cooking class with a local chef.”

What to see and do

“Pearl of the Lake Bellagio, Como Cathedral, Lake Como Boat Tour and Ristorante Silvio are unmissable. If the weather permits, don’t miss hiking in the surrounding mountains.”

Doha

Doha never fails to impress with something new and exciting. From enticing restaurants to historical souks, Qatar’s capital brims with intriguing sights that beckon to be explored. “Easily accessible via short direct flights from India, the luxe playground is a diverse destination to host weddings of every kind. It is at the crossroads of the East and the West. It impresses with its architecture, attractions and ever-growing food scene,” says Janki Desai of Altair by Janki Desai.

Where to wed

You can find a steady stream of splashy hotels in the city. Mandarin Oriental Doha is sophisticated both inside and out. “The St. Regis Doha is a great wedding location. It was the perfect setting to do the décor and design for a wedding in November 2023,” adds Desai. The lavish Sharq Village & Spa, a Ritz-Carlton Hotel, is a beachfront paradise that resembles a Sheikh’s palace.

How to elevate

Rich Qatari history and culture are perfect anchors for your celebration. “You can organise an Arabic attar counter for your guests to enjoy some blends and keep as favours. Traditional Al Sadu weaves can be part of the décor, while classic Qatari folk music can add to the ambience,” suggests Desai.

What to see and do

The National Museum of Qatar and the Museum of Islamic Art are great places to get a crash course in history. Souq Waqif is a century-old shopping landmark. You can also go for a desert safari.

Kerala

In Kerala, a different season promises different experiences. Set along India's tropical Malabar Coast, the state’s immaculate beaches, tranquil backwaters, terra-cotta soil, tropical forests, lush mountains and buzzing cities are what wedding dreams are made of. “Whether you want a rustic affair, a seaside ceremony, a laid-back vibe for your guests to feel at ease or lavish festivities, Kerala is conducive to celebrations of all kinds. Nature lovers will definitely love this breathtaking destination,” says Desai.

Where to wed

Kerala’s 590 km coastline is dotted with five-star hotels and luxury resorts. One of Desai’s favourites is Kumarakom Lake Resort, by the famed backwaters. “We did the décor for a heart-warming ceremony at the property,” she recalls. Perhaps a fun fact you need to know is that Prince Charles celebrated his 65th birthday at the resort. Both, the 264-key Grand Hyatt Kochi Bolgatty that overlooks Vembanad Lake and the Taj Green Cove Resort & Spa Kovalam with beach and backwater views, offer several indoor and outdoor spaces.

How to elevate

Desai says, “Decorists and planners can truly work their magic here. We used local jute as the wallpaper to create a unique open mandap recently.” The coastal state is a gastronomic heaven with a multitude of options for various palates and preferences. “Consider a sadya meal for the wedding.” One of Kerala’s most exquisite woodcrafts, the Nettur petti jewellery box as a favour is sure to become a treasured keepsake.”

What to see and do

Ride a traditional snake-boat. Watch a traditional dance performance Between Kathakali and Arjuna Nritham. Kerala is also synonymous with Ayurveda—indulge in a spa day (or two).
